Micro-droplet nucleation through solvent exchange in a turbulent buoyant jet

Solvent exchange is a process involving mixing between good solvent with dissolved solute and poor solvent. The creates local oversaturation which causes the nucleation of minute droplets. Such ternary systems on macro-scale have remained unexplored in turbulent regime. We experimentally study by injecting mixtures ethanol trans-anethole into water, forming buoyant jet upward direction. Locally, following entrainment. optically measure concentration nucleated droplets using light attenuation technique find that radial profile has sub-Gaussian kurtosis. In contrast to entrainment-based models, spatial evolution reveals continuous droplet downstream radially across jet, we attribute limited capacity jet. Although are far from full quantitative understanding, this work extends knowledge regime, brings novel type flow, broadening scope multicomponent, multiphase jets phase transition.
